Rates and FAQ

How do I know if I have trauma/PTSD?

Usually if you are wondering if an event for you was traumatic, it probably is. How we experience events are relative to us. There is no right or wrong measure for whether something is traumatic.

PTSD is a diagnosis that describes when you have multiple physical and emotional symptoms in some specific areas all at the same time. In addition, you must have these symptoms for a while and be unable to shake them. We can discuss this specifically with you if you are wondering if you have PTSD.

How do I know if EMDR is right for me?

EMDR therapy can be effective with many people. Whether it is right for you can only be answered after we have heard your situation and goals in the first session. However, we will make recommendations on the therapy that is right for you.

Do you tell parents what their kids say in therapy?

No, we keep a measure of privacy, especially for our teenagers who won’t open up if they think the therapist is just telling their parents everything. We do report harmful behaviors to parents, and we encourage teens to allow us to discuss general issues as it relates to parenting. What is disclosed to parents will be discussed within each session and you can ask specific questions if you have them. Remember, we are trained professionals that teens can rely on for sound advice and guidance.

How much paperwork do I have to fill out?

Everything is electronic. You will need to fill out the basics of your name, address and insurance information if using it. Then it’s a few clicks to sign the consent forms. There is one questionnaire about you and your areas of concern. The whole process should only take 5-10 minutes tops!

What can I expect at the first session?

We do a thorough assessment, including asking about what brought you to counseling now and what you want to work on. We ask about your history as it is relevant to your present goals. We set treatment goals with you and discuss the therapeutic approach we are going to take.

What are you writing on that note pad during sessions? Ha! We take a few notes related to your treatment goals and how we are achieving them in therapy. We always want to make sure we stay on track and are reaching your goals. You’re welcome to look at this at any time.

  • We look at you as a whole person, not just the problems you are dealing with. We consider what you want out of therapy, rather than what we think you need. In other words, you’re an active participant in the therapy process, deciding along with us what approach is best for you. We will recommend specific types of therapy if we think it is a good fit for you.

  • This depends on the goals you set and how extensive the issues are. We want you to get better and not need us anymore, so we are actively working on getting you a resolution and the techniques we use tend to be shorter term therapies.

  • Sometimes. Homework is usually just thinking about changes we’ve talked about in session or practicing a new behavior. Don’t worry, we won’t give you reading or writing homework if that’s not your thing.

  • This will depend on your needs and goals. We can discuss this in the first session and again throughout therapy. Please feel free to ask at any time!

Do you Take Insurance?

We do participate with some insurances however we are considered Out-Of-Network providers for all others. This means that if your insurance plan has out of network benefits, you may be able to use your insurance while working with us.

To do this, you pay for therapy at the time of the session. Then we provide you with a “superbill” that you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. We would recommend calling your insurance company to confirm if your insurance policy has OON benefits for mental health services. We are here to guide you through understanding how to access your out-of-network benefits.

Otherwise, you can choose to see us privately and not involve your insurance at all. See why many of our clients choose this option below.

Why would I choose to privately instead of using my insurance benefits?

Many of our clients prefer to work with us privately and not involve their insurance at all. To use your insurance for counseling, a mental health diagnosis is required, and this gets attached to your record. If your challenges don’t meet the threshold of a diagnosis, insurance companies can choose not to cover your therapy.

  • Insurance can put limitations on the number of counseling sessions you can have, prior to truly completing the process.

  • An insurance company has a right to call the therapist and ask for written records of session notes

  • At any point they can say that therapy is no longer medically necessary and cancel the coverage

If you have more questions about this or have questions about finding your OON benefits and would like to discuss, then we recommend reaching out to us on the contact page and we’d be happy to answer any questions.

Legal: No Surprises Act and Good Faith Estimate

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost.

Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services.

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services.

You can ask your healthcare provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.

Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.
